A record-setting 16 ambulatory surgery centers affiliated with Virtua Health are among Newsweek’s list of the best ASCs in the nation for 2023. ASCs are also known as same-day surgery centers, where people can have procedures that don’t usually require hospitalization – from colonoscopies to cataract removal to hernia repairs.

Of the 30 New Jersey ASCs to receive this distinction, Virtua is affiliated with 14 — or nearly half. Four rank among the state’s top five, with the Surgical Center of South Jersey in Mount Laurel earning the number-one spot, and the Center for Ambulatory and Minimally Invasive Surgery in Eatontown ranking second.

In fact, the Surgical Center of South Jersey ranked third out of all 510 centers on the nationwide list (scoring 88.91%).

The other two Virtua-affiliated centers recognized by Newsweek are in Huntington Valley, Pennsylvania, and Wilmington, Delaware.

“Same-day surgical care is on the rise, and patients appreciate the convenience and comparatively intimate setting,” said Barry Graf, senior vice president of partnerships and business development at Virtua Health, South Jersey’s largest health system.

“Virtua Health is fortunate to have tremendous partnerships across the region with providers who share our values when it comes to safety, quality, and experience,” he added. “Our strong showing on the Newsweek list affirms that we are providing the right care in the right venue for the people of New Jersey and beyond.”

Newsweek’s online report explained the need for such rankings, which benefit patients and their families.

“There are over 5,000 Medicare-certified ambulatory surgery centers around the country in all the major surgical specialties — orthopedic surgery, cardiac surgery, eye surgery, spinal surgery, and so on,” wrote Nancy Cooper, Newsweek’s global editor in chief. “To help our readers make knowledgeable choices when they seek surgical care for themselves or their loved ones, Newsweek has for the third year partnered with respected global research firm Statista to name America's Best Ambulatory Surgery Centers.”

Marlton-based Virtua Health congratulates its affiliated New Jersey ASCs recognized by Newsweek:

In addition, Virtua-affiliated Huntington Valley Surgical Center ranked fifth in Pennsylvania, and Limestone Medical Center, LLC, in Wilmington ranked fourth among ASCs representing the smaller New England and Mid-Atlantic states.

Virtua’s portfolio includes 30 joint-venture ambulatory surgery centers in total.
