How Virtua is Expanding Health Care Access Across Every Neighborhood

Health begins where people live, learn, and gather. Virtua’s Champions of Humanity initiative supports South Jersey communities with access to food, housing, care, and connection.

Good health is shaped long before someone steps into a doctor’s office. It begins in the neighborhoods where people live, the food they have access to, the safety of their surroundings, and the daily opportunities available to them.

Nearly 80 percent of a person’s health is influenced by social factors. That includes access to safe housing, nutritious food, transportation, education, and community support—often more than genetics or medical care alone.

Here in South Jersey, many families face barriers that make staying healthy harder. In Camden County, 15 percent of residents are unsure where their next meal will come from. In Burlington County, the number is 12 percent. These challenges affect real people and real families who deserve the chance to thrive.

“Champions of Humanity” is our commitment to meeting people where they are and making health accessible in everyday spaces. The initiative focuses on three main areas that influence wellness.

Supporting Basic Needs

Health begins with stability. At Virtua, we partner with local organizations to help individuals facing hunger, financial hardship, or housing insecurity. From providing fresh produce through our Eat Well food access programs to connecting families with essential services, the goal is to make sure everyone has what they need to live well.

Improving Access to Care

Many people delay care because of obstacles like cost, transportation, or not knowing where to turn. We work to bring preventive screenings, wellness programs, and mobile health services directly into neighborhoods, so care feels easier, more comfortable, and more reachable.

Strengthening Human Connection

Trust and support are powerful drivers of health. Virtua collaborates with community leaders and local partners to foster connection, encourage conversations, and create safe spaces where people feel valued. When people feel understood, they are more likely to seek care and take steps toward better health.

What It Means to Be a Champion of Humanity

Being a Champion of Humanity doesn’t require a title or a uniform. It starts with showing up — for your neighbors, your community, and yourself.

You can make a difference by:

  • Supporting access to basic needs — donate, volunteer, or help spread awareness about local food access, housing, or community support programs.
  • Staying informed and sharing trusted resources — pass along information about screenings, wellness programs, or community services that could help someone you know.
  • Encouraging preventive care — remind loved ones (and yourself) that checkups, screenings, and early care can make a meaningful difference.
  • Checking in on others — a conversation, a ride, or a small act of support can help someone feel less alone when navigating health challenges.
  • Prioritizing your own well-being — caring for yourself helps build healthier families and stronger communities.
  • Leading with empathy — listen without judgment, respect lived experiences, and meet people where they are.

When we collectively take small, thoughtful actions, communities grow stronger. Together, we can help create a South Jersey where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
