Why Weight Loss Plateaus Happen (And What to Do Next)

After surgical or medical weight loss, many people experience a period where progress on the scale slows or stops. This is called a weight loss plateau and it’s a completely normal part of the journey.

Weight loss is not always a straight line. After an initial period of steady progress, many individuals will notice their weight begins to stall, even when they are following their care plan closely. This experience, known as a weight loss plateau, is a normal and expected part of both surgical and medical weight loss.

In fact, weight loss providers often become more concerned when a plateau does not occur because it means the body has not had a chance to adjust to the changes taking place.

What is a weight loss plateau?

A weight loss plateau occurs when your body temporarily stops losing weight after a period of consistent progress.

Following bariatric surgery or medical weight loss treatment, your metabolism begins to adapt to your new body weight. Since your body now requires fewer calories to function, the rate of weight loss naturally slows. This pause allows the body to stabilize before continuing to lose weight again.

While this phase can be frustrating, it does not mean your efforts are failing. It simply means your body is recalibrating.

Why do weight loss plateaus happen?

The most common reason for a plateau is metabolic adaptation. As you lose weight, your body adjusts its energy needs and tries to maintain balance.

Other contributing factors may include:

  • Changes in physical activity levels
  • Differences in sleep patterns
  • Hydration levels
  • Small shifts in eating habits
  • Inconsistent medication use

Even small changes in daily routines can impact progress over time.

What should you focus on during a plateau?

During a plateau, it is important to return to the basics rather than fixating on the scale.

Ask yourself:

  • Are you meeting your nutrition goals?
  • Are you staying hydrated throughout the day?
  • Are you getting enough sleep and rest?
  • Are you exercising consistently?
  • Are you taking medications as prescribed?

These foundational habits play a critical role in long-term success, even when weight loss temporarily slows.

When should you reach out for support?

Support is a critical part of sustainable weight loss. If your plateau feels prolonged or concerning, your care team can help determine whether any changes need to be made to your plan.

Scheduling a follow-up appointment allows your providers to review your progress, nutrition, medications, and lifestyle factors to support continued success.
